When studying the Instagram accounts of the top 100 global brands in 2014, Simply Measured found that 88 percent of their posts include at least one hashtag. There’s a good reason for this. One hypothesis for this finding is that people have more time to watch Instagram Stories before work, during their lunch break, and in the evenings after work. 

Another reason that Instagram Stories are such a powerful channel for brands and businesses is that the threshold for content consumption appears to be higher. Airbnb, for example, slowly reveals content throughout their Instagram Stories in order to encourage users to move onto the next story frame – only revealing the answer on the very last story frame. 

Instagram Stories, compared to ads in the Facebook and Instagram news feed, have helped decrease our cost per click (CPC) to the Buffer Podcast landing page by more than 50 percent in some cases. For this reason, we decided to learn more about the usage of the social network by analyzing the performance of 44,432 Instagram Business profiles and over 8.9 million posts between January 1 and September 30, 2018.

An incredible 500 million people around the world use Instagram Stories on a daily basis (with that number rapidly growing by the minute). However, as the popularity of Instagram Stories grows and businesses continue to see success with the channel, we predict that daily posting will become more of a common thread throughout different verticals. 

Viral social media campaigns like this just go to show how well people can work together for a common goal (i.e., getting a photo of an egg to become the most-liked photo on Instagram). Instagram launched Stories in 2016 as their own version of Snapchat’s disappearing stories, and since that time they’ve added additional features that make Instagram Stories uniquely appealing as its own experience. 

Going live on Instagram can be a great way for your brand to interact directly with your followers, as users can like and comment on your video in real time. Unlike other social media platforms, Instagram’s simple profile layout forces you to focus on the quality of content … not the quantity. 


Your editorial calendar is also a great place to record any key events to highlight on your Instagram account, such as new product launches or special offers. With an editorial calendar, you can keep an eye out for real-time opportunities instead of scrambling for last-minute posts.
